BUSCEMI Since 1996, Dirk Swartenbroekx (Belgium) is making "warm" records under the name of Buscemi, one of his favorite actors. His style is deep. Difficult to categorise: nu bossa, nu lounge, house music, brazilian grooves, afrobeat, drum 'n bass, jazzy electro, balkan beats ... Buscemi has released 10 EP's, 4 fully-fledged CDs, 2 compilations for the famous Blue Note label, one mixcompilation for Ministry of Sound Germany and one compilation of the remixes he did between 1997-2005. Buscemi's fame as remixer is rapidly spreading, and besides top Belgian acts like Lais and Hooverphonic, he also reworked tracks for bands like Beach Boys, Suba, Madredeus and Calexico. On 2003's 'Camino Real', Dirk Swartenbroekx explored his exquisite taste for beautiful girls (as seen on his gorgeous record sleeves) and additional warm chilled grooves. The album included all the best ingredients we already experienced from him: stylish house music with a classy french funky touch, intelligent Brazilian flavoured beats and deeply skinned Latin vibes. Lifting his music to a new level, Buscemi introduced some wellknown artists through his music: singer Carla Alexander, Spearhead Michael Franti and Ted Milton from eighties cultband Blurt. French bossa-diva Isabelle Antena (Les disques du Crépuscule) starred on the smash single 'Seaside'. 'Camino real', named after the prestigious hotel in Acapulco, Mexico, was an adventurous gathering of joyful tunes, mature grooves and tiny songs. On the new album 'Retro Nuevo', Buscemi serves us even more and better exotica. Of course there are some more lovely bossa moments. Dutch singer Fay Lovsky contributed her cute words and vocals to the charming 'Nao falo português'. Viviani Godoy conquered the broken beats of the pleasing 'Isolada do Mundo'. African singer Alexia Waku layed the funky ,,Jumilla''. Dag Taeldeman (A Brand) brought the chemistry of 'Medusa'. Besides, Buscemi experimented with both Bollywood and Balkan grooves. The album was preceded by the storming electro jazz-clubsingle 'Jazz Jumper', that got excellent response from dj's worldwide. Even the great Isabelle Antena returns with another superb performance on the lovely and chilled 'Nothing to worry about'. 'Retro Nuevo' ends with a cry from Paradise, probably somewhere in Andalusia. Nothing to worry about, once more Buscemi makes nostalgia feel comfortable in a contemporary atmosphere of indulging beats and melodies. Buscemi still is in demand as both producer of remixes and dj. For maximum of energy, Buscemi plays with a full live band featuring Luuk Cox (Shameboy) on drums, Hans Mullens on bass, Brazilian singer Viviani Godoy on vocals, and an extended horn section, supplied by Sam Versweyveld. The band performed on some of the biggest festivals and venue events in Benelux and foreign countries: Rock Werchter, I Love Techno, Blue Note Records festival, Montreux Jazz festival, Ten Days Off, Oppikoppi festival (South Africa), Montreal jazz festival, Burning Man festival in the desert of Black Rock City, Aca Sound Fest in Acapulco, Sokos Club in Helsinki and Café Roset in Moscow. As dj, he created Squadra Bossa, a versatile format to combine dj-sets with live-instruments. Amongst the artists involved in Squadra Bossa are dj Stanley Livinsgtoon and musicians Philip Cortez (percussions) and Sam Versweyveld (trumpet).
